Here is a photo of Gilbert Baker's Key West rainbow flag. In 2003, to commemorate the rainbow flag’s 25th anniversary, Baker created this 1.25 mile rainbow flag that stretched down Key West's Duval street from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean in a sea-to-sea proclamation of pride and diversity.
Baker is the creator of the original rainbow flag. He created the rainbow flag in 1978 on the request of his good friend, the late Harvey Milk. Milk had asked Gilbert to create something bright to replace the pink triangle.
The Key West flag was created over three months and included more than 18,000 yards of nylon fabric and 25 miles of seams. Sewn in 100-foot and 250-foot sections seamed together, it weighed more than three tons.
